What does Explosion Proof mean?

The term explosion proof describes electrical and non-electrical fixtures that can prevent explosions from occurring. An electrical product marked explosion proof has an apparatus enclosed in a case capable of withstanding an explosion of a specific gas or vapor that may occur within it, while preventing ignition of specified surrounding gases or vapors by sparks, flashes, or internal explosion. In this context, explosion proof does not mean the enclosure is designed to withstand an external explosion; it means the enclosure helps prevent an internal spark or explosion from causing a larger blast.
